The Circus (or Hippodrome) was built in the early part of the first century CE. It seated about 30,000 persons, and was used primarily for chariot races. Chariot drawn by two horses were called bigas; those by four horses, quadrigas. Eleven rows of special tiered seating was apparently used by tribunes, competition judges, and financial patrons.
