Seville Cathedral was built between 1402 and 1506 in high Gothic style on the site of a mosque. A bell tower and a large weathervane were added to the minaret of the mosque to make the tower 305 feet high. A series of ramps in the center of the tower allows easy access to the level of the bells, 230 feet above ground level. The tower, La Giralda, ("the weathervane") is a symbol of the Cathedral and a landmark of the city.
